Tyler Perry can now add philanthropist to his list of credits. The actor, director, and filmmaker, donated $1 million to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the civil rights organization. The gift is the largest donation from an individual in the organization’s history. Perry credits the organization with helping pave the way for his success in the film industry.
NAACP leaders reported that the gift marks a major shift in black philanthropy as donations of this size have not typically gone to civil rights groups. The donation comes at a time when many have come to question whether the NAACP remains relevant.
